Here’s what you need to know about our English as a Second Language Course

Our English as a second language course is delivered by experienced instructors, who provide our students with the one-to-one attention they need to succeed. Focus College welcomes many international students each year who get the opportunity to practice and improve their English because of our program.

Our English as a second language course will build your language skills through reading, listening, writing, and speaking exercises. There are 4 levels in the program – Beginner, Lower Intermediate, Upper intermediate and Advanced. Each level has 20 lessons, a practice exam, and a final exam. In each lesson, you will apply vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, conversation patterns, and reading on subjects that we experience every day in Canada, such as greetings, activities, sports, hobbies, and many more.

Prerequisites

Minimum Grade 12, or equivalent Canadian qualification, or relevant experience, or mature student.

For Distance Learning Students

  • Access to internet (high speed recommended)
  • Minimum download speed of 15 megabits per second
  • Minimum upload speed of 5 megabits per second.

Computer Equipment

A personal computer is required for the entire program, with a minimum of the below specs:

  • A minimum of 8 gigabytes of RAM
  • Headset with microphone or a good pair of speakers and microphone
  • Windows 10 or newer | Updated Apple Software
  • Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari

NOTE: This program is not designed to work on devices such as smart phones or tablets.

English as a Second Language Course Details

Study hours: 400

Full-time duration: 12 weeks

Full-time hours: instructional time of 20 or more hours per week, or if the program leads to employment in a career occupation regulated by Transport Canada, instructional time is 15 or more hours per week.

Attendance Expectations: Students are required to maintain their attendance as per the FC attendance policy.

Students who enroll in a language program which is six months or less in duration or for which tuition is less than $4,000 may not claim the Student Tuition Protection Fund, which is managed by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

English as a Second Language Course FAQ

How long does it take to complete the program?

The onsite instructor-led program is 3 months. 3 additional 3-month extensions can be purchased to allow one year to complete the program. Initial enrolment in the online program is 6 months with an additional 6-month extension available so that you have up to one year to complete your training.

Should I choose the onsite or online option?

If you are local and want to attend an instructor-led, small classroom setting, the onsite option may be perfect for you. If you are located outside of our catchment area, the online program gives you the flexibility to complete the program anywhere in the world where you have access to a computer and the internet. The online program is available 24/7, 365 days a year, so you can study whenever you want to.

Do I need to purchase a textbook or additional materials?

No! Everything you need is included.

Focus College response to Covid-19

Due to the current pandemic and the desire to protect the health of our students, Focus College is taking measures which incorporate social isolation.

For current students:

We are suspending our Advanced Diploma and Office Manager courses for the week of March 16-20th, to allow for temporary distance learning to be set up. If any students do not have access to a computer from home, we request that they notify the college immediately. Further information on how courses will be delivered will be available as the week goes on. Please monitor your student email for further information throughout the week.
